FAQs

Whether you're new to Cub Scouts or just need a refresher, this page is here to help answer the most common questions from parents and guardians. If you don’t see your question below, feel free to contact us — we’re happy to answer questions and look forward to growing our scouting family!

  • Cub Scouts is a program of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) that encourages children to explore the world around them, learn new skills, build friendships, and develop strong values. It’s hands-on, active, and focused on building character, leadership, citizenship, and personal fitness — all in age-appropriate ways.

Cub Scouts is for youth ages Kindergarten through 5th grade - all genders are welcomed! After 5th grade, qualified individuals can “cross over” and move up to a scout troop, which runs through high school graduation (hello, Eagle Scouts!). There are a few different scout troops in our area to choose from, including BSA TROOP 179.

Whether we’re racing Pinewood Derby cars, learning how to build a fire, or helping out in our community, every activity is designed to inspire curiosity, teamwork, and growth.

  • Pack 179 will typically meet 2xmonth for Den Meetings, and 1x per month for a full pack meeting with all dens. The full pack meeting is usually combined with an event such as camping, a hike, or another awesome adventure.

In the past, meetings for all dens were held on Thursday evenings at Good Shepard in Collingswood from 6:30-8pm. For the 2025/2026 year we are still finalizing the meetings days and times and this will be done by den according to the availability of den leaders and their cubbies.

  • Boys and girls in kindergarten through fifth grade can join. Each grade level is part of a specific "den" based on grade level. Dens are as follows:

    • Kindergarten: Lions

    • 1st Grade: Tigers

    • 2nd Grade: Wolves

    • 3rd Grade: Bears

    • 4th: Webelos

    • 5th: Arrow of Light

  • Annual costs include:

    • National BSA Registration Fee

    • Pack Dues (to help cover awards, activities, and supplies)

    • Uniform and Handbook

We do our best to keep costs affordable. Fundraising opportunities (like wreath sales) help offset expenses — and help make scouting affordable for all who want to participate.

Pack 179 registration and dues for the 2025/26 year will be 225.00, payable in full at sign up by check or venmo. Depending on our fundraising success, some activities may have additional fees to participate such as ice skating and camp outs. Our goal is to fundraise enough this year to offset any additional costs per scout above the 225.00.

  • Yes! Cub Scouting is family-oriented. For younger Scouts (Lions and Tigers), a parent or guardian must attend all meetings and events and participate with the child. For older ranks, adult participation is still encouraged and appreciated. Cubpack 179 is run entirely by parent volunteers and we are stronger when we all work together.

  • Absolutely! Pack 179 is run entirely by parent volunteers — and we’re always looking for more help. Whether you want to lead a den, help at events, or pitch in behind the scenes, we’d love to have you on board!
